Due to the measures taken to prevent the spread of coronavirus, the final in-person stage of the Olympiad has been rescheduled for May 23-24. Consequently, the deadline for applications has been extended until April 26.
Olympiad for senior bachelor's students and graduates majoring in Applied Mathematics and Information Science or related fields.

Winning the Olympiad is equivalent to a successful selection for the Joint Master's Program in Statistical Learning Theory offered at HSE and Skoltech.

Why to participate
The main goal of the participation in the Olympiad is admission to the Joint Master's Program in Statistical Learning Theory offered by HSE and Skoltech. This program prepares specialists and researchers in the key theoretical unit of Machine Learning.

Russian and global economy are in urgent need of statistical learning theory specialists as it is SLT that underlies machine learning – one of the fastest-growing fields of information technology.
This program knows no equals at the current Russian universities. It lies at the confluence of statistics, optimization, and machine learning. It unites science and the most advanced technologies in the field of information technology. We offer our graduates great opportunities in the academic domain as well as in business and innovation.

How to participate
Graduates and senior bachelor's students pursuing Bachelor's, Specialist's or Master's degree in Applied Mathematics and Information Science or related fields can participate in the Olympiad.

Online selection round
Online selection round includes portfolio competition. It is required to upload the following documents in the online application system by 11:59 PM on April 26:
  • CV in English
  • Academic transcript or supplement to bachelor's/specialist's/master's diploma
  • Motivation letter in English (500-1000 words)
  • One recommendation letter from a supervisor or academic advisor (original in any language and translation into Russian done by an applicant)
  • Description of research projects or publications in peer-reviewed journals (if applicable)
  • Awards, certificates, diplomas for winning field-oriented competitions, Olympiads or participating in conferences
On-campus round
The on-campus round will be held for two days (May 23-24) and include three selection components:

If you win
Winning the Olympiad will be equated with obtaining the highest possible score for the entrance examinations for the Master's program in Statistical Learning Theory offered at HSE and Statistical Learning Theory track of the Master's program in Data Science offered at Skoltech. Program start – September 1, 2020.
FAQ
How will my portfolio be evaluated during the online selection round?
The result of the online selection round will be estimated by the amount of participants' points for each document in the portfolio in the following way:
  • CV: up to 10 points
  • Academic transcript or supplement to bachelor's/specialist's/master's diploma: up to 10 points
  • Motivation letter: up to 10 points
  • Recommendation letter: up to 10 points
  • Description of research projects or publications in peer-reviewed journals (if applicable): up to 10 points for each project/publication but not more than 30 points in total
  • Awards, certificates, diplomas for winning field-oriented competitions, Olympiads or participating in conferences: up to 10 points for each award but not more than 30 points in total
What to expect at the on-campus round of the Olympiad?
The final round includes the following components: written test in Mathematics, interview with the members of the methodological panel and faculty of the Organizers, TOEFL ITP exam.
How will the written test in mathematics be organized?
The written test in Mathematics will be organized by the following procedure:
  • Olympiad participants take their seats
  • Each participant receives an envelope with the tasks, answer sheets, and scratch paper
  • Participants open the envelopes only after a member of the methodological panel instructs to do so
How will the interview be organized?
Interview with the members of the methodological panel and faculty of the Organizers is conducted with each Participant for 15 minutes. For the interview, each Participant is required to prepare a presentation of their individual academic achievements. Time limit of the presentation is 5 minutes.
How will the English exam be organized?
Written English exam TOEFL ITP will be organized by the following procedure:
  • Olympiad participants take their seats
  • Each participant is instructed about the exam rules and is given sealed examination material with tasks and answer sheets
  • Participants open examination material only after a test supervisor instructs to do so
How can I learn my results?
Based on the results of the Olympiad final round, the participants will be awarded with first-/second-/third-degree certificates. Winners of the Olympiad are the Participants who are awarded with the first-degree certificates. Prizewinners of the Olympiad are the Participants who are awarded with the second-degree and third-degree certificates. Winners and prizewinners are selected not later than two weeks after the final round of the Olympiad. The organizing committee documents the results in a protocol and informs each participant via email not later than two weeks after the Olympiad final round.
I live in another city and i cannot afford travel expenses to participate in the olympiad, is it possible to get financial support?
In cases where Participant selected for participation in the Olympiad final round lives in a city other than location of the Olympiad, the Organizers may arrange roundtrip and accommodation during the on-campus round. Every case is considered by the Olympiad organizers individually. If you need financial support, you are required to state it in the motivation letter.
